Instagram is introducing a new feature that allows users to start a livestream visible only to those on their ‘Close Friends’ list. This new feature, called ‘Close Friends on Live,’ enables users to go live with up to three other people.

The company highlights that this functionality can be useful for sharing thoughts, catching up with friends, sharing memes, planning trips, or casually hanging out with your closest friends. Previously, in 2016, Instagram launched ‘Live Broadcasts,’ but these streams were public, allowing anyone who follows you to join and watch.

Since its introduction, the live broadcast feature has been popular among celebrities, influencers, and content creators for connecting with their fans and followers. However, it was less appealing to regular users who were uncomfortable with the idea of all their followers being able to see their live streams.

Meta states that the new feature can be useful for sharing influencer-like content, having discussions without judgment from random followers, or hosting a study session with a limited audience.

In recent months, Meta has been working to make Instagram a more private platform. Last November, the company introduced an option for users to make posts on their grid visible only to close friends. A few weeks ago, Instagram added a feature that allows users to limit interactions to their close friends.
